The TJC Executive Brief | Issue 02: Strategy Is Not the Problem. Sequence Is.

By Dr. Tannya L. Jenkins | T Jenkins Consulting

Most organizations do not have a strategy problem. They have a sequencing problem.

Leaders know where they want to go. The vision is compelling. The priorities make sense. The organization may even have the talent, resources, and ambition required to get there.

Yet execution stalls.

Why?

Because transformation is not simply about identifying the right things to do. It is about doing the right things in the right order.

When organizations attempt to transform everything at once, activity increases—but progress often does not. Teams become stretched. Priorities compete. Decisions slow. Accountability becomes unclear. And leaders can mistake motion for momentum.

Sequence creates leverage.

Before scaling, establish alignment.

Before delegating, define decision rights.

Before automating, stabilize the process.

Before measuring performance, clarify what success actually means.

Before accelerating execution, make sure the organization is moving in the same direction.

This is where strategy becomes operational.

Sustainable transformation requires leaders to understand the dependencies between people, culture, strategy, and execution—and deliberately sequence the work so each step strengthens the next.

Speed still matters.

But speed without sequence can simply help an organization move faster in the wrong direction.

Success loves speed. Sustainable business loves sequence.™

The executive question for this week is simple:

Where might your organization be trying to accelerate something that first needs to be aligned, clarified, or sequenced?

That is the work.

And we’re just getting started.

If this challenge is showing up in your organization, we would welcome the opportunity to partner with you.
